Lost Memories
Video Game Opening Title Design
This is my MFA Motion Media Design Thesis, completed at Savannah College of Art & Design. The thesis statement I explore is the combination of Point-of-View Shots and Integrated Text in Opening Title Sequences in Video Games to play a multifaceted role, acting as narrative drivers and immersive background elements to engage players from the very start.
My thesis consists of two distinct parts: research paper and a visual project. For my visual project, I created a Title Sequence for the First-Person video game Firewatch, which explores the innovative integration of credits for the game's cast and crew into the game environment itself. These credits seamlessly coexist within the virtual world, appearing on road signs, highway billboards, and bar signage. The integration of situational typography ensures that the text aligns with the game's narrative, creating a realistic and immersive experience. This approach transforms the opening introduction into an engaging and unique element that contributes to the player's overall understanding of the game world and story.
By investigating the incorporation of POV shots and integrated text within opening title sequences, this thesis seeks to shed light on how these elements can enhance player engagement, set the stage for the game's narrative, and create a more immersive gaming experience.
